China has donated US$45.3 million to Mozambique to help finance the construction of Xai-Xai airport, in Gaza province, under one of three economic cooperation agreements signed on Friday in Maputo by the minister of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique.

Minister Oldemiro Balói said after the ceremony that construction of the new airport will place Gaza within the network of provinces linked by air transport and will improve the mobility of people and goods, but also serve as an alternative airport or as a platform and a response to emergency situations, according to daily newspaper Noticias.

The second agreement signed by the Minister and Ambassador Su Jian involves the supply of 100 buses for public passenger transport, worth US$7.448 million and the third agreement, of an undisclosed value, related to financing of the project for supplying satellite television services to 500 villages in Mozambique.

At the end of October China said it would donate about US$15 million to Mozambique to help finance the construction of Xai-Xai airport, which is located just over 200 kilometres from the capital of Mozambique.

The donation document was signed in Maputo, by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nyeleti Mondlane, and the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique, Su Jian. (macauhub
